The FDA approved Kybella injectable treatment can disintegrate stubborn fatty deposits in submental (chin) area to reduce the appearance of a double chin in a nonsurgical way.

Deoxycholic acid is the main active ingredient in Kybella. It disintegrates and absorbs undesirable fat.

When does the Swelling Subside?

Kybella is a quick and reliable treatment with low to no recovery time. Some patients experience mild inflammation in the injection sites following the treatment. This is a common occurrence, but the swelling resolves in a short while.

A majority of patients experience a peak in the inflammation approximately 20 to 28 hours following the procedure.

This swelling will begin to resolve after 48 hours and subside by the third day. In a few cases, the swelling may persist for a longer period. However, this depends on the medicine dose administered as well as the cosmetic goals of the patient.

Only a Kybella-trained medical practitioner can administer this treatment. The patient will undergo multiple tiny injections beneath the chin during each treatment session. The process of injecting takes between 15 to 20 minutes. The number of injections varies depending on the fat deposits in the submental area and the desired outcomes of the patient.

Number of Kybella Treatment Sessions

Patients should be watchful for symptoms such as an uneven smile, challenges in swallowing, or weakness in the facial muscles as well as issues in the injection site such as ulcers (open sores), bruising hair loss, and necrosis (tissue cell death) in the injection area. In rare cases, Kybella can lead to serious complications such as:

• Nerve injury in the jaw area causing an uneven smile or weakness in facial muscles
• Problems in swallowing
• Injection area problems such as ulcers (open sores), bruising, hair loss, necrosis (damage and tissue cell death).

Minimizing Inflammation Risks and Other Side-Effects

The patient should honestly disclose any existing medical conditions to their Kybella provider before the treatment, including:

• Have received or plan to undergo facial, neck, or chin surgery
• Have received cosmetic procedures of the face, neck, or chin
• Have experienced or presently have any health conditions in or near the neck region
• Have problems in swallowing
• Have bleeding issues
