Ever wish you could gently obvious signs of aging: brown spots, blood vessels, uneven pigment and rosacea… with a magic wand? Well now you can! IPL “Photo-Facial” treatments are a non-invasive alternative for treating a variety of skin conditions on the face and body that result in a more even, luminous and younger looking complexion!
As the population ages, ever-increasing numbers of people are interested in improving their appearance. Daily exposure to the sun produces severe skin damage. As we get older, some of that damage can be manifested by irregular or blotchy pigmentation spots, called solar lentigo and melasma. These spots detract from our natural beauty as they interfere with the clarity of our skin and color.
IPL treatments improve the appearance of photo-aged skin, removes age spots (sun-induced freckles), most benign brown pigments, and redness caused by broken capillaries through a process called photo-rejuvenation. The IPL process is ideal for patients with active lifestyles because the procedure requires no downtime and has a low risk of side effects. Patients can see dramatic results within a very short time. Safe, effective, quick and easy… what could be better?
What is the Motykie IPL Photo-Facial?
Motykie Medical Spa offers the newest and most advanced IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Phototherapy technology by Alma Lasers: the Harmony XL AFT (Advanced Florescent Pulsed Light) Phototherapy treatment. AFT is an innovative and effective treatment created to eradicate red facial veins & flushing, improve acne Rosacea, treat irregular pigmentation, erase age spots or sun damage, shrink large pores, and reduce fine facial lines.
How is an AFT Treatment better than the traditional IPL Treatments?
AFT is the next generation of intense pulsed light ( IPL). AFT delivers “Equally Distributed Fluence”, which means that every single pulse has a uniform energy density across the entire output face. This fluence ensures repeatable results and remarkable safety!
The advanced AFT Treatment is also a more comfortable experience with less skin damage. This photo-rejuvenating process leaves the skin radiant and smooth, starting from the very first treatment. A short series with this gentle non-ablative laser can resolve many skin issues. Because there is no removal of skin and no effect on the surface layer of skin, there is no major downtime. The light passes harmlessly through the skin and is absorbed by spots and lesions. The abnormal cells are destroyed, leaving only healthy tissue. AFT additionally stimulates the growth of collagen and can decreases pore size for a more youthful appearance.
Patients are advised to discontinue the use of Accutane for 6 months, Retin-A, glycolic acid and alpha-hydroxy acid products for 3-5 days before your treatment. They also should avoid sun and sunless tanning for three weeks prior to a treatment. If you are taking aspirin, antibiotics, or other blood thinners you may experience increased photosensitivity. You cannot be treated while you have infections or sores in the area being treated.
What does the treatment entail?
The skin is cleansed, prepared with gel and then treated with the light. The light penetrates the tissue and is absorbed by either the blood when treating vascular lesions or the melanin when treating pigmented lesions damaging them. A natural process in the body then removes the injured tissue, giving the skin a more even and youthful appearance. The treatment has been described as feeling like the snap of a rubber band.
Afterwards, the gel is cleaned off and replaced with sunscreen. Cold compresses may be used if needed. Numbing cream can be applied before treatment if requested for complete comfort.
How many treatments are required?
The standard suggested amount is a series of 3-5 treatments, depending on individual skin concerns, in 4 week intervals. In order to achieve maximum skin results with photo-facials, it is recommended that a patient continue to protect their skin from the sun and maintain a good at home skincare regimen.
Are there any possible side effects?
You may experience a sunburned look for a few hours after treatment, and targeted spots will temporarily appear darker and flake off within a week. Hair growth will most likely be affected in the treatment site and will slow for a short period of time. Swelling, blistering, infection, unwanted pigmentation changes and scarring are all extremely rare side effects. Existing viral infections such as shingles and herpes may be activated by the treatment. Phototherapy is a safe, common and quick procedure with little risk. Those with darker skin tones may need more treatments and have a higher risk of side effects.
What can be expected post-treatment?
After your treatment you will want to protect your skin with moisturizers and sunscreen. Cold compresses and steroid creams may be used as necessary. Avoid irritating your skin, and keep away from the sun and sunless tanners for the entirety of treatment(s).
The most common side effect is a very mild redness and or tingling sensation that can be likened to the feeling of sunburn. Cool air and cold compresses help relieve this discomfort quickly.
The photo-facial side effects clear up so quickly that many patients schedule their IPL treatment during their lunch break and return to work immediately after, just adding a bit of foundation to mask the redness until it fades on its own.
Each IPL treatment is conveniently quick and takes only about 20-30 minutes from start to finish.
How long do the results last?
The effects of AFT photo-facials can be long-lasting if the skin is well cared for. After a couple of years, additional treatments may be needed for maintenance.
Other Frequently Asked Questions
What are pigmented lesions?
Nearly 100% of all people have one or more pigmented lesion. Some are caused by sun exposure, others by aging, and some we were born with. Regardless of the cause, pigmented lesions are simply spots on the skin where there is a higher concentration of melanin. Some lesions are flat while others are raised.
How does Phototherapy work?
By exposing a pigmented lesion to short pulses of visible light, the temperature in the highly concentrated melanin can be raised sharply, enough to shatter the cells containing the melanin. The body then replaces these cells with new cells generated by the surrounding untreated area.
