Dermal Fillers Risks and Safety

Dermal filler injectable med spa treatments currently rank as the second most popular cosmetic procedure in the US after Botox. The safety profile of this treatment is high, which has encouraged many more people to seek these injections for facial rejuvenation.
However, the patient should still have a clear understanding of potential side effects and risks in order to make a well-considered choice. Motykie medical spa, led by board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Gary Motykie, provides dermal filler injections to patients in Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and other cities in Southern California.

Hyaluronic Acid Based Fillers

Risks with hyaluronic acid (HA) based dermal fillers are mitigated because HA is a biocompatible substance. This compound occurs naturally in the body and performs the function of providing support to the skin structure. Many of the leading dermal fillers include HA has the key active ingredient.
FDA approved injection fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm, Voluma and Belotero Balance are based on HA. Therefore, these filler treatments do not require any prior skin allergy tests. However, if a dermal filler gel is based on animal extracts such as bovine collagen fillers, the med spa treatment provider may order allergy tests before administering them.
Advanced dermal filler injectables such as Sculptra, which is based on poly-L-lactic acid, and Radiesse, which is based on calcium compound microspheres are also considered very safe. Prior allergy tests may not be necessary with these fillers, except when the patient has a history of skin allergy.

When to Contact the Doctor

During the post-treatment period, the patient who has received dermal filler injections should be alert to any signs of abnormality or unexpected side effects. Although very few risks are associated with fillers, but it is still important to remain cautious in the first few days after the treatment. The patient should get in touch with the treatment provider if:

  • The swelling, bruising and redness are prolonged and do not dissipate after one week. This could be a sign of an allergic reaction or an infection.
  • The patient experiences acute pain in the injection areas coupled with asymmetry, which continues even after a week or 10 days.
  • The patient develops some bumps or nodules in or around the injection sites or uneven areas around the skin.

The patient will be able to minimize certain risks if they follow the treatment provider’s advice carefully, both before and after the treatment.

Minimizing the Risk

The patient should choose a qualified treatment provider with adequate experience in administering dermal filler injections. The treatment should be received in appropriate volumes only. In delicate areas of the face such as below the eyes, only specific fillers such as Restylane should be applied for safe outcomes.
Pregnant and nursing women should avoid dermal filler injections. If the patient has a habit of smoking, they will be required to refrain from smoking for a certain period of time before the injections are administered. Motykie medical spa receives patients from Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and nearby areas for dermal fillers.
